Nzulezu, meaning “surface of the water” in the Nzema language, has a fascinating origin story. According to oral tradition, the villagers’ ancestors migrated from Walata, a city in the ancient Ghana Empire, led to their current home by a mystical snail. The village is essentially a long pier, referred to as “Main Street” by locals, with structures lining either side.
